The Right Amount of Protein as We Age

We can learn a lot from Dr. Joseph Mercola, one of the leaders when it comes to healthy aging. His article on protein and strength training drives home some of the essential goals that we work on in the FitNow program—optimizing nutrition and fitness. Diet and exercise are keys to a long, healthy life, as we see here.

Dr. Mercola explains, “As you age, it becomes harder to maintain muscle strength and bone health. Muscles tend to reduce in size unless you consistently exercise.” I love this statement because it is so true. We might not think about this on a daily basis, but it is a fact of life and something we may begin to notice when we take a break from working out. The good news is there is something we can do about it!

As Dr. Mercola reminds us, protein should be on our radar. “Protein is essential for proper muscle growth and maintenance—especially for seniors, as your body becomes increasingly less able to use dietary protein for building muscle.” He provides some good research indicating that as we age, our protein intake should increase—not by a large amount, but enough that we should pay attention.

We talk a lot about protein in the FitNow program. Don’t think that everyone needs a high protein diet. That’s just not true. What you do need is an amount of protein that meets YOUR needs for where you are in life.

It’s all too exciting and important to let slip through the cracks. Check out FitNow to learn what your body needs for optimum health.
