On September 1, 2017, San Diego issued a public health emergency for a Hepatitis A outbreak. As of September 13, 2017, sixteen people have died and over 300 people have been hospitalized from the outbreak in San Diego, CA, with a large majority of those affected being the homeless who lack access to sanitary environments and clean food and water .
Hepatitis A, a highly infectious viral infection, attacks and causes inflammation of the liver. Common symptoms include flu-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, fever, fatigue), upper right abdominal pain, clay colored stools, loss of appetite, dark urine, joint pain, and yellowing of the skin and eyes, also known as jaundice . These symptoms can last between two weeks to six months. Hepatitis A is commonly spread through the fecal-oral route, which means that a person can be infected by ingesting food or water or touching an object that has been contaminated with fecal matter from an infected person. The most commonly affected populations in the United States are young children, the homeless, unvaccinated individuals, illicit drug users, and those who work in healthcare or childcare settings.
