5 Ways to Get Motivated to Start an Exercise Program

1. Think Outside of the “Gym Box”

What did you do for fun as a kid? Did you enjoy biking, dancing, softball/baseball, basketball, soccer, handball, swimming?

Chances are what you enjoyed as a kid you will enjoy as an adult. Who cares if you are not able to perform with the same invincible energy you had back in the day. The whole point is to get moving and be consistent.

Chances are there is a community league, community center, fitness center to cater to what you wish to start. Class Pass and Groupon are other great resources to look at as both offer great deals on almost any physical activity you can think of.

“No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch.”

2. Lay Out Workout Clothes Where You Will See Them

You know the saying “out of sight out of mind?” Putting your workout clothes where you can see them makes it more likely for you to remember to work out. It’s so easy to get caught up in day to day routines that we often forget to add a new habit such as exercise into our routine.

3. Be SMART About Your Goals

SMART is an acronym used by many healthcare professionals to help patients set goals. It stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. An example of a SMART goal is “I am going to go for a 15 minute walk daily after work for the next 3 days” or “I will sign up for Tuesday’s spin class”.

4. Start Small

Oftentimes the hardest part is getting started. Making any change no matter how small makes it more likely to make other changes. Making changes builds self-efficacy or the belief that you can carry something out.

“Motivation breeds motivation.”

5. Use the Buddy System

Accountability and support make any behavior change easier and more likely to stick. A study out of University of Aberdeen found that having an emotionally supportive work out buddy makes it more likely you will be consistent with exercise.
