About Whooping Cough
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. Whooping cough’s most noticeable characteristic is the uncontrollable, violent coughing that makes it hard to breathe. After a fit of many coughs, those infected take a deep breath that results in a “whooping” sound.

0-2 week symptoms
• runny nose
• low grade fever
• mild, occasional cough
• apnea – a pause in breathing (babies)

1-2 week+ symptoms
• fits of many violent coughs followed by a high pitched “whoop”
• vomiting during or after coughing fits
• exhaustion after coughing fits

Coughing fits become more common and violent as the disease progresses and can occur more often at nighttime. The fits can go on for 10 weeks or more.

Treatment
Whooping cough diagnosis is made through a physical exam and laboratory tests. The disease is treated with antibiotics and early treatment is critical mitigate the illness and limit its spread.
