Flu is a common infectious disease caused by the influenza virus.  You’ve probably experienced the body aches, fevers, cough, sore throat, and fatigue that result from infection.  You also know that flu is not a pleasant experience, causing many missed school and work days, doctor visits, hospitalizations, as well as deaths each year.

Annual flu shots protect you and the CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months in age get one[1].  To provide season-long protection, getting the influenza vaccine during or before October is best although later is better than never as the disease peaks from December through February with new cases sometimes occurring as late as May.

There are two major types of the vaccine – the trivalent, which protects against two strains of type A influenza and one strain of type B influenza and the quadrivalent, which protects against two type A strains and two type B strains. The trivalent is more common but the quadrivalent provides broader coverage.  Greg Poland, a vaccinologist at the Mayo Clinic notes that type B strains are common and the challenge prediciting which type B will predominate in a given year.  He continues that vaccine companies include the wrong type B in their trivalent coverage about half the time[2] so protection is regularly incomplete.

Getting your flu shot at WellNow is easy, either with an appointment or by just walking in.  Vaccine administration just takes a few minutes.  Most health insurance plans pay for the vaccine but they also can be purchased under our October specials by cash patients for just $20 (trivalent) or $32 (quadrivalent).
