About Flu Shots

Flu vaccines are delivered by needle, usually in the arm, to prevent the spread of seasonal Human Influenza A and B in the United States [1]. Today, there are two types of flu shots, Trivalent and Quadrivalent. These seasonal shots protect against the three or four influenza viruses most common during the October – March time range [2].

Two Kinds of Flu Shots: Trivalent & Quadrivalent

Trivalent Flu Shot

The traditional trivalent flu shot protects against three strains of influenza:

  • Influenza A (H1N1)
  • Influenza A (H3N2)
  • Influenza B (B/Yamagata)

Quadrivalent Flu Shot

The newer quadrivalent flu shot is more effective, protecting against four strains of influenza:

  • Influenza A (H1N1)
  • Influenza A (H3N2)
  • Influenza B (B/Yamagata lineage)
  • Influenza B (B/Victoria lineage)

Should I Get A Flu Shot?

WellNow’s professional recommendation is YES. Since 2010, the CDC estimates that flu hospitalizations have reached up to 710,000, while deaths have reached up to 56,000. Even people who are healthy can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others, so the more vaccinations given, the less likely the flu will spread through a community.

How Much Do Shots Cost?

At WellNow, we carry both trivalent and quadrivalent flu shots. Our trivalent flu shot costs $20, while our quadrivalent shot costs $32. We highly recommend that you receive the more expensive quadrivalent shot so you are protected from all A and B strains this flu season. However, any flu shot is better than none, so if you cannot afford a quadrivalent shot, at least protect yourself and others with trivalent shot.
